Under the law, people who deliberately or unintentionally caused harm to others can be held liable for their actions. The punishment that will be imposed upon them often corresponds to the seriousness of the action that has been committed.
Justice has been served after an emergency room doctor was convicted of assault with a deadly weapon when he swerved his car in front of two bicyclists along Brentwood road, causing them to collide into a sedan’s back.
The 60-year-old physician who was identified as Christopher Thompson, from Los Angeles, was also found guilty of battery resulting to severe injury, mayhem, and reckless driving in the July 2008 accident.
According to authorities, the bikers had an argument with Thompson on a narrow road before he slammed on his red infinity’s brakes.
One bicyclist has scars over his face and broke his teeth while the other one suffered from a dislocated shoulder.
The physician could spend 10 years in state prison.
Many people have already argued with other road users but did not do what Thompson has done. He caused injury to others just because he lost his temper. His conviction shows just how efficient the justice system works.

An 84-year-old woman after her vehicle crashed the wooden fence of the parking lot and onto the wall of an apartment building while parking in Orange Imaging Medical Center. Fortunately, the elderly driver was unhurt in the accident.
Initial investigations showed that the woman stepped onto the accelerator thinking that they were brake pedals.
In this case, the woman was lucky that she didn’t appear to have suffered injuries. However, she will be held liable for all property damages that the car collision caused.
Cases of drivers mistaking accelerators for pedal brakes seem to be a growing trend that results to car crash especially among the elderly.
So, people above the age of 70 must take driving tests to prove that they are still capable of driving.

Drunk driving is a common issue usually attached to young drivers. Although there may be various reasons why they are doing this act, one fact stands out—young drivers who drink before operating a vehicle are more prone to fatal accidents compared to other drivers.
Another accident involving a wrong-way driver on the 91 freeway recently ended the lives of two people after she caused a head-on collision.
According to authorities, the driver who was identified as Jessica Shekell, 21, from Fullerton, is suspected of drunk driving.
Her 2003 Toyota Tacoma was traveling west in the 91 freeway’s eastbound FasTrak lanes when it smashed into a 2009 Chevrolet Silverado along east of the 55 freeway. Two Miguel family members from San Bernardino were killed due to the incident, authorities said.
The Silverado’s driver who was identified as Sally Miguel, 44, was announced dead at the accident area. Meanwhile, Patricia Miguel, 30, the person who was at the front seat, died after she was brought to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana.
The victims’ two nieces, ages 11 and 15, were brought to Western Medical Center in Orange to receive treatment for their sustained injuries. The 15-year-old girl suffered from moderate injuries while her 11-year-old sister suffered from major injuries.
Shekell was brought to UCI Medical Center. She will face driving under the influence charges, police said.
Although people are continuously informed regarding the effects of drunk driving, they still do not realize the suffering it can cause to other people in the occurrence of accidents. Perhaps handing out graver punishments will be a way of lessening the presence of drunken drivers.

Ignoring traffic laws endangers the life of a driver and other motorists on the road as well. One of the rules they should follow is stopping or reducing speed whenever it is needed.
A driver who failed to stop his vehicle in time caused a six-car collision in Huntington Beach that ended his own life.
According to authorities, Martin Espinoza, 55, from Huntington Beach, was driving his 1994 Dodge Intrepid along northbound on Brookhurst Street towards Adams Avenue and was unable to stop in time.
He crashed into the back of a Dodge Caravan that was being driven by Paige Beyer, 38, from Huntington Beach, triggering a chain reaction that caused damage to six vehicles.
Beyer received treatment for pain in her legs and arms at Hoag Hospital. No one else sustained injuries in the accident.
Espinoza was announced dead at UCI Medical Center in Orange.
Drivers must be cautious with what is happening outside their vehicles to avoid smashing into other vehicles or objects. In addition, they should not do anything that may cause them to have slower reflexes like drinking or driving even while exhausted.

Specific punishments are imposed by law to convicted violators. The penalty that will be given corresponds to the gravity of the person’s actions and the harm it causes to others.
Justice was given in the second degree murder conviction of a 45-year-old driver who has a history of drinking and driving. He was convicted after he struck and killed a pedestrian in Pacific Beach earlier in the year.
A Superior Court jury also condemned Alan Lester Mabrey, guilty of hit-and-run with death or injury, and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.
He was charged in relation to the death of Emily Cathleen Dowdy, 24, who was struck while she was crossing Mission Boulevard at Reed Avenue.
Prosecutors said the defendant got behind the wheel of a pickup truck owned by his friend after drinking a number of beers. He left the accident area but returned around an hour later after eating a meal at a nearby restaurant.
Mabrey’s blood-alcohol level reached 0.22% around an hour and a half after the incident. The prosecutor said he had six previous misdemeanor and felony DUI convictions in Colorado and Texas.
Mabrey could face up to 19 years to life in jail.
It is good to know that the justice system is still working. The number of fatal road accidents might be lessened if the law continues to punish proven violators. Hopefully, this case will remind all drivers that they are required by the law to do their specified responsibilities while out on the road.
