Fine and imprisonment are what negligent drivers may face in case of conviction. These punishments are what await Melvin Pearles if convicted in a case of gross vehicular manslaughter. The charge was brought about by the killing of Alexandria Drake in a car collision.
During the arraignment, Pearles pleaded not guilty. Judge Charles Ervin of the El Cajon Superior Court released him on recognizance in lieu of giving up his driver’s license. If convicted, he would be facing a maximum imprisonment of six years.
Negligent driving brings about irreversible consequences. For Drake’s love ones, Pearles’ conviction would give them justice. It would teach Pearles a lesson and all others who have potential in doing the same act.
Drake’s death was just one of the thousands of incidents of car accidents. In 2005 alone, about 6,420,000 auto accidents occur in United States. These incidents claimed the lives of 42, 636 and injured about 2.9 million others. Statistically, about 115 American die every day of vehicle mishaps that is about one death in every 13 minutes.
Sad fact remains that despite traffic rules and regulation, road accidents are still prevalent. Worse, innocent people are involved in senseless act such as negligent driving.
For victims, personal injury laws could be their refuge in enforcing liability against the parties at fault. If their case is handled by a car accident lawyer, victory is within reach.
